Sex Work, Survival Sex and Sexual Exploitation

The learning outcomes for this course are:

• To evaluate current debates surrounding the language and terminology used to define sex work, survival sex and sexual exploitation on a local and national level
• To explore common stereotypes and acknowledge diversity about this client group
• To share knowledge about the nature of sex work and adult sexual exploitation in Tyne and Wear
• To explore links with modern day slavery
• To gain an understanding of the primary needs of our client group and how best to support them
• To share information about individuals who work within the local escort industry whilst exploring stigma, labour and work stress (physical and emotional)
• To share good practice around trauma-informed environments and challenges when engaging with clients who have multiple and complex needs
• To explore sexual exploitation and to recognise the needs of clients aged 16 to 25 (age of transition)
• To gain knowledge about the law and sex work and the role of the Police Dedicated Liaison Officers (DLOs)
• To highlight and discuss the needs and experiences of men who sell sex and those vulnerable to sexual exploitation
• To gain information about working with victims of sex trafficking
• To explore the lives of individuals involved in sex work, survival sex and those vulnerable to sexual exploitation

By the end of this course participants should be familiar with good practice guidelines working with people involved in sex work and those vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
