Howay the Lads: Self-esteem for boys and young men

This 2-day course will offer participants a chance to address self-esteem for boys and young men in an enjoyable and challenging way through innovative group work methods. It will offer an exploration of practical techniques and resources to raise self-esteem and emotional awareness with boys and young men using active learning techniques. By the end of the course, participants will have: • Gained a greater understanding of the role played by media and peer pressure on young men’s self esteem • Explored their own and others’ attitudes and beliefs about young men, masculinity and gender • Increased their understanding of how low and high self-esteem impact differently on behaviour • Developed skills in supporting boys and young men to recognise and articulate their feelings • Learned and practised a range of practical ways of working with boys and young men around emotions, body image, relationships and trust in ways that boost their self esteem • Considered the role played by friendships, supportive adults and professionals in building positive self-esteem • Tried out new approaches to building boys’ self-esteem, sharing methodologies and insights drawn from our own experiences • Gained a repertoire of exercises and practical tools for their direct work with boys
