The Worker’s Educational Association was launched in the North East in 1910 at a time when education was mostly accessible to the wealthy. Just four year later the world was at War. The WEA are currently engaged in a year-long Heritage Lottery-fund project to uncover fascinating stories about these men and women, with volunteers, students and WEA groups undertaking research and creative activities. A Selection of this work will be on display at St Mary’s Heritage Centre as a commemoration to World War One and the history of the WEA North East.
