Description:

This Christmas, join English Heritage's Assistant Curator of Roman Collections, Kate Sheehan-Finn, as she brings to life the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Enjoy one of her 45-minute talks and the opportunity to handle some of the ancient Roman objects used during the celebrations.

Kate will be focussing on the similarities between Christmas as we know it today and Saturnalia. She'll be looking into religious rituals, feasting and drinking and the tradition of presents and family time. You'll also get an insight into how social conventions were overturned during the festival. The sessions will take place inside the English Heritage Museum at the fort. It'll be a rare opportunity to handle artefacts and discover more about the festival on a site where Romans would once have celebrated it.
No booking required.
